Good Samaritan jumps into action after toddler left alone in vehicle

Toddler left in SUV in Detroit parking lot for close to an hour

DETROIT – A good Samaritan came to the rescue of a crying toddler who was left alone in a hot SUV.

The minivan was parked at the Meijer store off Woodward Avenue and Eight Mile Road in Detroit.

The toddler was left inside the SUV in the parking lot for close to an hour, police said. Someone in the parking lot heard the child crying and jumped into action to free her.

It was discovered the sunroof was open, and a man who heard the crying was able to free the child.

Detroit police filled the Meijer parking lot after getting a call that the girl was in the vehicle. The 17-month-old was found inside her car seat, locked inside the SUV by her grandmother.

The grandmother apparently went in the grocery store with her three other grandchildren. She told police she didn't want to wake the sleeping toddler, so she left her in the SUV.

Temperatures on Saturday reached the mid-70s, and it was likely hotter inside the SUV. Police ticketed the grandmother and child protective services were called to investigate.
