Grosse Pointe Woods police release pictures of purse snatcher

Elderly victim knocked to ground, dragged by thief

GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich. – Grosse Pointe Woods police have released pictures of a man wanted for stealing a 83-year-old woman's purse.

Police said the elderly victim was loading bags into her trunk on Nov. 26 in the parking lot of a CVS Pharmacy on Mack Avenue when a man in a pickup truck drove by, reaching out to grab her purse.

The victim was dragged a distance with the purse as the man drove away.

The victim broke her hip and injured her elbow during the ordeal.

The woman's sister, Chris Cattrill, said the victim had parked in a handicapped space because she broke her other hip years ago.

"It's unconscionable that someone would do this to an older person," Cattrill said.

The woman underwent surgery on Thanksgiving and is now in a rehabilitation facility.

Police said the thief was caught on two security cameras using the victim's credit cards to buy cigarettes at another CVS Pharmacy and Speedway gas station in Harrison Township.

Police described the thief as white, mid-20s, 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall, brown hair with a beard.

The pickup truck he was driving was a maroon Ford Ranger with an extended cab. In the bed of the pickup truck was a frame for a Tonneau cover.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Grosse Pointe Woods Police Department at 313-343-2412.
