The cash-strapped city had received a $2.6 million  federal grant for the station, but the project could not go forward until state historic preservation administrators gave their approval for the old structures to be torn down and the site cleared.

The old facility, which dated back to 1917, was demolished in January.

The prospect of a new fire station is welcomed by the 26 current members of the Highland Park fire department.

For the past seven years, the department and its trucks have been working out of an old warehouse.
