Highers brothers to appear in court Thursday

Raymond and Thomas Highers spent 25 years in prison for 1987 death of Robert Karey

DETROIT - Raymond and Thomas Highers will appear in court Thursday. Neither of them will be tried again for a 1987 homicide case that they've already spent decades in prison for.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Wednesday said murder charges against the brothers were being dismissed.

The brothers were convicted of killing Robert Karey in Detroit and served 25 years in prison.

They were released in August 2012 and granted a re-trial when a new witness came forward with information.

Their second trial was set to begin in October.

"Just as we did 26 years ago, we firmly believe in the evidence in this case. We have worked diligently to bring this case to trial. With the passage of time it is an unfortunate reality that this case cannot be put back together and we must dismiss it. Sadly, in this case justice was not done," Worthy said.
