Highland Park police save mom, baby when woman's water breaks

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. – Officer Marlon Walton was on patrol when he saw a man frantically waving him down on Woodward near Manchester.

The man was at a bus shelter and inside there was chaos.

"I heard a woman screaming and other people were yelling 'she's having a baby,'" Walton said.

As he assessed the situation, his partner, Officer Chris Zuellig, rolled up.

The woman's water had broken and she was in pain.

"I wanted to make sure the baby wasn't crowning," Zuellig said.

Walton called dispatch for an ambulance and was told there would be a 15-minute wait. Both officers took matters into their own hands, got the pregnant woman and her fiancé into a squad car and headed to Henry Ford Hospital, where a team was waiting for them.

Corey Jones said his fiancée's pregnancy is high-risk and they got her to the hospital just in time. Doctors are trying to keep her from having the baby for another month. They're expecting a girl.

Jones couldn't thank the officers enough.
