Highland Township family concerned about dangerous intersection

Bus stop moved due to number of crashes at intersection

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A family in Oakland County is voicing its concerns about a dangerous intersection that has them feeling unsafe in their own home.

A mountain of ice was spilled on the Highland Township road during the most recent incident there. It's a cold example of why the family is waving a red flag and trying to prevent a tragedy.

Debbie Lissner said she believes the intersection of Hickory Ridge and Clyde roads can be very dangerous.

"This is the bus stop," she said. "This is where my grandkids would stand. Right here."

Lissner said the bus stop was moved to their family porch after a school bus hit a Jeep in front of their home.

"The bus stop has changed due to that accident," Lissner said. "The kids have to stand right here, where it would be safe from traffic."

Lissner's son and his family bought the home at the corner of Hickory Ridge and Clyde before the school year started. They didn't know gravel haulers would speed through the intersection.

They're worried a vehicle will hit their house. They've even moved their bedroom on the corner of the home to the interior to make it safer.

"If someone hits (the home), it will take out their bedroom," Lissner said.

Lissner said in the most recent incident, an ice truck tipped over trying to avoid a car. It happened Tuesday, and left 1,000 pounds of melting ice at the intersection.

The family has been voicing concerns about the intersection to the Oakland County Road Commission.

"I'd say, 'Slow down, post more signs,' and then say, 'Why don't you do something about this intersection?'" Lissner said.
