Volunteers celebrate Vaisakhi, the Sikh New Year

DETROIT - Homeless Detroiters got a helping hand Saturday afternoon from members of the Sikh community.

The group gathered near Midtown, handing out hot pizza slices, fruit and coffee, as well as toothbrushes, toothpaste.

Volunteers are celebrating Vaisakhi, the Sikh New Year, by practicing what their faith encourages: giving back.

"We're out here as a community, regardless of racial and religious differences. We're all one and we're here to celebrate that," said Harman Singh, of Seva4Everybody.

"I think what they're doing is ideal. It's great," one person said. "It's what the world should take heed of."

The youth group, which formed last year, plans to make this a monthly event.
