PENNGROVE, Calif. - A Sonoma County horse is back on solid ground after firefighters pulled the animal out of a septic tank.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports the horse's owners called for help around 3:30 a.m. Monday after the accident occurred on a ranch in the town of Penngrove.

Fire officials say the horse was standing on ground over the six-foot-deep tank when the top collapsed, leaving the animal's back legs stuck in the muck.

Eight people including firefighters from nearby Rancho Adobe and the horse's owners used a hose to pull the horse's legs out of the pit.

Officials say the horse was limping but appeared to be OK after the rescue. A vet was expected to examine the animal Monday.
