Of the 37 bridges within the reconstruction project's boundaries (Newburgh Road on the west and Telegraph Road on the east), 14 already are fully closed.

The project, which started the first weekend of April, has all lanes of eastbound and westbound I-96 closed between Newburgh and Telegraph roads until October.

Most major road bridges, such as Newburgh Road, are partially closed right now.

The eastbound and westbound I-96 service drives (Schoolcraft Road) will have only the right lane open between Telegraph and Newburgh roads until October.

In addition, the following ramps will be closed until October:

  • Outer Drive to westbound I-96
  • Greenfield Road to westbound I-96
  • Evergreen Road to westbound I-96
  • Northbound and southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway) ramps to westbound I-96

I-96 in Livonia, Redford Township 1st built in '70s

Interstate 96 between Telegraph and Newburgh roads was opened in the 1970s.

Since that time there have been fixes and maintenance but now the Michigan Department of Transportation says it requires a total rebuild.

"There's just no more rehabilitation, no more band-aides you can put on this freeway. We need to dig down and build it from the bottom up," said MDOT's Rob Morosi.

It's estimated cost is $170 million.

Some looking forward to I-96 closure:
