Jason Dalton faces 6 murder charges

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Surveillance images from a gun store in Plainwell, Mich. show Jason Dalton in the store just hours before the shooting rampage in the Kalamazoo area.

Dalton, 45, faces six counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and eight counts of felony firearm for the series of random shootings that killed six and left two others injured. He was arraigned Monday and is being held without bond.

The surveillance images from Southwick's Guns Ammo and Gear are time stamped just before 3 p.m. Saturday. Store owner Jonathan Southwick said Dalton was a regular at the store. He smiled, laughed and hugged an employee, Southwick said.

He spent about 10 minutes in the store before buying a "heavy duty" jacket that could conceal a small pistol.

The gun store owner said Dalton never gave him any reason to be alarmed.

Attacks began about 6 p.m.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said the attacks began about 6 p.m. Saturday outside the Meadows apartment complex on the eastern edge of Kalamazoo County, where a woman was shot multiple times. She is expected to survive.

A little more than four hours later and 15 miles away, a father and his 17-year-old son were fatally shot while looking at cars at a car dealership.

Fifteen minutes after that, five people were gunned down in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant, Matyas said. Four of them died.

"These are random murders," Matyas said.

Dalton was arrested without incident about 12:40 a.m. Sunday after a deputy spotted his vehicle driving through downtown Kalamazoo after leaving a bar parking lot, authorities said.
