Bobby Collins accused of driving truck into 2 Wayne County road workers

DETROIT – A Lincoln Park man was charged Friday in connection with a crash that killed a Wayne County road worker and injured another in Taylor.

Bobby Lee Collins, 47, is accused of crashing a Wayne County truck into David Wolf, 47, and Wilbert King while they worked to fill asphalt on damaged parts of the road.

Collins was working as a truck driver for Wayne County at the time of the crash, officials said.

The incident happened at 10:39 a.m. on March 23 near Van Born Road and Fellrath Street in Taylor.

Medical officials took Wolf and King to a hospital, where Wolf was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.

King was treated for serious injuries to his abdomen and leg.

Collins is charged with reckless driving causing death, reckless driving causing serious impairment, work zone death and work zone injury.

Collins was arraigned Friday before 23rd District Judge Geno Salomone and is being held on $50,000 bail.

A probable-cause conference is scheduled for Aug. 7 and a preliminary examination is scheduled for Aug. 14.

Worker killed in 'tragic accident'

"Today, a member of our Wayne County family perished in a tragic work accident, while another was seriously injured,"Wayne County Executive Warren Evans said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with their families as we grieve with them. This a terrible and sad day for Wayne County."

Tim Grapentine, battalion chief of the Taylor Fire Department, said it appeared one of the men was pinned between the two county vehicles. The truck parked in front of the men was being driven by a 61-year-old from Belleville.
