DETROIT – Two children survived a fire Thursday morning at a church on Detroit’s east side however a litter of puppies died.

The fire happened at about 4:30 a.m. in the 17000 block of Rowe Street.

Authorities said the fire started in the back of the old rectory of a church where a mother and her children live. 

The 17-year-old and 11-year-old children got out of the building, as did two adult dogs.

A litter of puppies did not make it out of the fire.

Authorities said the children’s mother is currently in Chicago and the children were alone when the fire started.
