Watch: Mayor Mike Duggan officially selects James White as Detroit police chief

Detroit City Council does have to approve mayor’s selection

DETROIT – Mayor Mike Duggan announced Monday he has selected James White as chief of the Detroit Police Department.

You can watch his full announcement in the video above.

White has filled in as interim Detroit police chief since James Craig retired on June 1. The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners had compiled a list of candidates to become Craig’s permanent replacement, and Duggan interviewed those candidates.

When White was named interim chief, he said he would compete for the permanent job and that he planned to “work harder than anyone” to prove he is the right choice.

On Monday, Duggan said selecting White for the job was the “worst kept secret in the city.”

Duggan’s choice will have to be approved by the Detroit City Council when they return from recess.
