DETROIT – Two people are in custody after shots were fired at Detroit police officers on the city’s west side, authorities said.

The shooting happened just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 5) in the 6090 block of Westwood Street on Detroit’s west side. That’s in the area of Ford and Evergreen roads.

Neighbors said Detroit police officers were walking along the street when someone fired shots at them. A construction worker who was in the area said it sounded like fire crackers.

“What I heard was, it’s like, ‘Bow, bow, bow, bow, bow, bow,’ and I’m like, ‘Whoa, what’s going on?’” one man said. “I was scared. My little brother’s right here, my father’s right here. The second I heard the gunshots, I told my father to go inside the house. I look there and I see four guys running, three guys running, and it shook me.”

It’s unclear whether any officers were struck.

Police confirmed two people are in custody. They might be searching for a third person, as well.

A SWAT team with riot shields was spotted at the scene. They brought an armored truck, as well as a K-9.
