AC repairmen are in highest demand across smoldering Metro Detroit

Air conditioner repairmen in high demand as Metro Detroit sizzles

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – As the temperature soars to record highs, Joe Formica finds himself in high demand.

When the weather heats up, Formica is in the business of keeping people cool. This summer has been a scorcher and business has been hot-hot-hot.

"You start in the morning around 8 o'clock you just go," he said. "You know you don't have a time set when you're going to go home."

Formica, who works for Flame Heating Cooling Plumbing and Electrical says it's the excessive heat that's taking a toll on air conditioners.

"You never know what you're going to come up with. Is it going to be a problem where you stay there an hour? Four hours? All day?" he said.

Local 4 caught up with Formica at Tom and Lori Duda's Rochester Hills Home.

"When it got to be 100 degrees today, it got to be unbearable," said Lori.

The couple's air conditioner stopped working a few days ago.

"It was constantly like ... sweating ... do your hair and makeup and everything starts dripping away," Lori said.

Eighty-five dollars later and the Dudas have relief from the heat.

"Thank you to Joe for fixing the air conditioner," said a smiling Lori.

Flame Heating Cooling Plumbing and Electrical is averaging more 120 calls for help a day. The repairmen don't wear capes, but sometimes you'd think they did, especially this summer.

"I'm their hero," said Formica, laughing.
