1 dead after carjacking, police chase in Detroit

Police say victim OK, but 1 of 3 suspected carjackers killed in crash

DETROIT – A 16-year-old is dead after a carjacking and police chase in Detroit early Monday morning ended in a rollover crash on the city's east side.

Police said a man was filling up his 1991 Dodge Duster at a gas station on Van Dyke near 8 Mile Road around 2:30 a.m. when he was carjacked by three teens.

The teens drove the 24-year-old man, of Warren, in his car down the road to a McDonald's and let him out. They then took off with his car.

Police said officers spotted the stolen car and began chasing it at a high speed down 7 Mile Road.

The Dodge lost control near Strasburg Street, rolling over several times before hitting a tree.

A 16-year-old was killed. The other two, who are both 15 years old, are hospitalized.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the victim knew his attackers.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from the gas station.
