DETROIT – A 12-year-old Detroit boy is being treated for a bullet wound to the leg after he was shot while playing outside.
The shooting happened on Pelkey Street not far from 7 Mile Road on Detroit's east side.
Romero Moore, 15, and five of his friends were walking in the neighborhood when shots rang out.
At first, they thought what they were hearing were firecrackers, but then they realized someone was shooting a gun.
"Somebody started shooting at us, then we had to stop," said Moore. "Then my friend had said he had been shot, then they started shooting again and we had to run."
Moore's friend, 12-year-old Marquis Harris, couldn't avoid all of the bullets. He was shot in the leg.
Malik McCray is Harris's older brother.
"It looked like it went in and it went out, but at the same time we were lucky it stuck on," said McCray. "There was blood over it so I couldn't even tell there even was a hole."
Witnesses say it appeared bullets were coming from all directions. Whether the kids were the intended target, right now, is unclear.
This is the second time a child has been the victim of gun violence in this neighborhood in the past few weeks.
"It's stupid. It's pointless. Let the police deal with it," said McCray.
Police say Harris has been sent to the hospital and is in stable condition. He is expected to be okay.
