7 hurt in Detroit riverfront shooting

Boat docks, fight breaks out between women, and 4 people were shot

DETROIT – Police say a shooting along the Detroit riverfront following a fight during a boat cruise has left seven people injured.

Sgt. Alan Quinn says there was "some sort of altercation" aboard the Detroit Princess riverboat ahead of the shooting about 1 a.m. Monday. Quinn says a female involved in the fight went to a vehicle, drove back to the area where the boat docks along the Detroit River and opened fire on the crowd.

Quinn says one person who was shot in the body was listed in critical condition and most of the other injuries were described as "minor."

Detroit Princess GM Chris Clarke was still in shock after the shooting.

"It all took place in a matter of fifteen seconds," said Clarke. "By the time I got out, to the outside area, I heard one shot."

Clarke said he heard the gunfire and screams for help.

"Unfortunately, these half-a-dozen or dozen people have now ruined a safe venue for a young crowd," said Clarke.

Sources tell Local 4 a family brawl broke out on board.  Once the boat docked, the female passenger got off, went into her parked car, got a gun and waited for her victims.

The Sunday night party was promoted by hip-hop radio station 107.5, although the station didn't sponsor the event. There have been eight similar Sunday night cruises targeting a younger crowd.

"As far as us, it probably is and it's going to effect what we do Sunday nights," said Clarke. "It's going to hurt other parties, I'm sure, for those that really think Detroit is an unsafe place."

Police on Monday morning didn't have a description of a suspect. They're asking anyone with information about the shooting to call investigators.
