Decomposed human body found in east Detroit neighborhood

Detroit police say DTE Energy contractors found body 20 feet off Minnesota Avenue

DETROIT – A decomposed human body was found Wednesday afternoon on Minnesota Avenue between Greeley and Riopelle streets in Detroit.

The body was found by tree service workers about 20 feet off the street. Detroit police say it looks like it has been there for a while.

"Contractors for (DTE Energy) were out conducting some surveys to repair some lines and came across a body that appears to have been there for quite some time," said Detroit police Cpt. Harold Rochon. "It was covered by snow, and because of the (warmer) weather the snow melted and the body was found."

Rochon said they can't tell if it is a male or female body at this point because only bones remain.

"Our Detroit Homicide unit is going to conduct an investigation, and that's where we are right now," he said.

Detectives are trying to connect the dots to figure out if the remains are that of a missing woman. They are looking into a year-old missing person case from the same area.

The finding happened right across the street from John Sanders' home.

"I'm just surprised really. I'm very surprised. I never thought it'd be that way," he said.
