DETROIT – St. Paul Tabernacle Church of God in Christ was the site of a gun surrender program in Detroit on Saturday.
The Groceries for Guns event aims at making local neighborhoods safer by getting more guns off the street. For every gun turned in Saturday, participants received a $50 Meijer gift card to buy groceries. The Wayne County Sherriff's Department was on hand to safely collect the guns during the event.

Groceries for Guns is sponsored by Southfield-based law firm, Goodman Acker, P.C. and made possible through a partnership with Wayne County Executive Robert A. Ficano, Wayne County Sheriff Benny N. Napoleon and Bishop P.A. Brooks.
"Like so many others, my partner Barry Goodman and I, just have had enough of the gun violence that is claiming lives and destroying families and communities," said Gerald Acker, senior partner of Goodman Acker, P.C. "Fortunately the leadership of Wayne County shares our frustrations, and is helping to make our vision of fewer guns on the street a reality. We can't save the world, but if this program can help save just one life, it's certainly worth it."

Ficano. "Our goal is to encourage people to bring in unwanted guns, which will be a positive contribution to making our homes and neighborhoods safer.
