Detroit firefighters transport fire victim after EMS response delayed

DETROIT - A man is in critical condition after being rescued from a house fire early Tuesday morning on Detroit's east side.

Firefighters pulled the man from the flames in the 4000 block of Ashley when the fire started around 2 a.m.

Firefighters called for an EMS unit, and waited nearly 20 minutes for it to come. Eventually, the firefighters themselves then transported the victim to a hospital.

A source has identified the victim as Dennis Girardin.

A second victim was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Arson investigators are on the scene.
