Detroit girl, 4, shoots self with father's gun

Girl in stable condition, found gun in glove box of SUV

DETROIT – Detroit police said a 4-year-old girl is in stable condition after accidentally shooting herself with her father's gun.

Police say the girl, Niema Douglas, found the Glock 9 millimeter pistol late Monday night in the glove box of her father's GMC Yukon sports utility vehicle parked outside her family's home in the 20400 block of Monte Vista Street on the city's west side.

It was not clear if Niema was alone in the SUV after midnight.

She was rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital by a family member after shooting herself in the right thigh. Detroit EMS was not called.

She has since been moved to recover at Children's Hospital.

The girl's father does have a concealed weapon permit. The gun was loaded inside the glove box.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office will review the case and decide if charges will be filed against the girls' father.
