Detroit – A mother will spend decades in prison for the stabbing death of her 8-year-old daughter in their Detroit home.
Semeria Greene was sentenced Monday to 23 to 50 years in prison.
"I'm sorry for the accident, the mistake that I made. I miss my daughter," Greene told the court.
She pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder, but made a plea before the case went to trial.
The Department of Human Services tried to remove Tameria Greene and her siblings from their home in 2012. But court Referee Richard Smart declined, suggesting instead that their mother should move out or place the children elsewhere.
The state didn't appeal. Tameria was killed in late December 2012.
Psychiatric evaluations of Semeria Greene extended the criminal case.
