Highland Park mayor shot in the leg at Detroit nightclub

Police say Mayor DeAndre Windom was an innocent bystander in the shooting

DETROIT – The mayor of Highland Park is recovering after being shot in the leg at a Detroit nightclub.

Mayor DeAndre Windom was shot just before 2 a.m. Sunday at the Key Club in the 1400 block of Franklin.

Windom was taken to Detroit Recieving Hospital to be treated for a gunshot to his right leg.

Highland Park City Attorney Todd Russell Perkins told Local 4 the mayor was out with friends and family and didn't know the gunman.

Detroit police said Windom was a bystander and wasn't involved in whatever altercation took place before the shooting. Windom was also the only person who was shot.

Perkins said the mayor is up and walking around.

"He's in good spirits," Perkins said.

Sources said a bouncer held down the gunman until he was arrested.

"It could have been a lot worse than it was. It wasn't. Thank goodness. We're looking to move on, upward and onward," Perkins said.
