DETROIT - Detroit City Council's newest president will preside over her first meeting on Tuesday.

Monday was Saunteel Jenkins' first day on the job. She was voted into the role by Council last Tuesday after former president Charles Pugh's disappearance from meetings.

Pugh disappeared just as allegations surfaced that he had an inappropriate relationship with a high school student he mentored.

The lawsuit filed against Pugh was later suspended by the alleged victim's lawyer.

Jenkins served as chief of staff for former City Council president Maryanne Mahaffey, who died in 2006.

Andre Spivey was also appointed president pro-tem after Gary Brown stepped down to take a job with Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr's staff.
