Man who shot 3-year-old girl on the loose

3-year-old in stable condition after shooting in Detroit; police search for shooter

DETROITThe 3-year-old who was shot at an east side home is recovering in the hospital Wednesday morning.

The shooting happened Tuesday night at the home near State Fair and Cardoni Street.

Police said the young girl is in stable condition after being struck by a shotgun blast. She is expected to survive.

Investigators tell Local 4 that the shooting in the 19000 block of Cardoni Street began as a small dispute between neighbors. Sources say with tension rising, Latina Edwards, who lives on the block, grabbed her 3-year-old daughter, Amaria Parham, and jumped in a van. She was trying to leave when someone pulled out a shotgun and fired it at the van. The girl was hit in the arm.

"Wasn't nobody really out here. All we heard was gunshots. We don't know where they came from," said Dominique Lauderdale, a family friend.

Wasting no time on an ambulance, the Edwards sped off toward Children's Hospital.

"Another example of tempers going awry, people resulting to guns to settle disputes," said Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee. "Not acceptable and we're going to work all night to see if we can get that individual in custody.

Police officers filled the neighborhood Tuesday night. Godbee said they know who the shooter is but they have not released any more information.

"That's all I can think about is that he needs to be caught," said the girl's grandmother, Sharrie Edwards.

Police do not believe Amaria was the shooter's target.
