DETROIT – There is growing concern for the safety of Detroit bus drivers after a gunman opened fire at a bus Monday on the city's west side.
It happened at the corner of Plymouth Road and Fielding Street on the city's west side.
Police said a 1990s model, black Chevrolet Impala pulled up next to the bus at the stop light. There were four men in the car. A car window was lowered and one man fired a shotgun at the bus driver's window, shattering the glass.
The bus driver was not injured. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the shooting.
"He's OK physically, for now, but mentally he's messed up," said friend and fellow Detroit bus driver Mark Williams. "Something like this should never happen. You're just driving down the street on your bus and someone just drive up to you and pull a shotgun."
Williams is a bus driver union representative. He said events like Monday's shooting have his drivers on edge.
"It's getting to a point where I don't know what's going to happen because the drivers are fed up," he said. "This thing that happened tonight is pretty much a breaking point."
The men fled in the Impala. Detroit were looking for the vehicle Monday night.
