Jim Meilenner drove to Detroit for his mother in-law's funeral, brought wife's ashes with him in car

DETROIT – Jim Meilenner drove to Detroit for his mother in-law's funeral and memorial service on Friday.

He brought along his deceased wife's ashes in the truck of his 2010 Pontiac G6. Meilenner's wife died 6-years-ago and he says he brought the ashes to share with her family members.

Meilenner also hoped to place some of the ashes alongside his mother in-laws ashes. His car was parked at his father in-laws home on Fairport in Detroit, when someone stole the car along with the ashes in the trunk.

Meilenner said he doesn't care about the car and just wants his wife's ashes back.

"It's irreplaceable," he said. "You can't put a value on a loved ones ashes."

He made plans with Swanson Funeral Home to allow the culprits to drop off the ashes, with no questions asked.

Late Friday afternoon, Meilenner says the ashes were recovered.

He says police found the stolen car and the ashes were still safely inside. Police dropped them off to Meilenner, who says he was very grateful to have them back.
