Layne had been charged with 1st degree murder but the jury went with the lesser charge of 2nd degree murder. She could receive life in prison for such a conviction and may be eligible for parole.

Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper said Layne is looking at about 12 to 20 years in prison for the murder conviction. Cooper said she could get an additional two years for the firearm conviction. The sentencing will be discussed and argued in court.

Jonathan Hoffman was shot to death May 18, 2012 at the condo he shared with his maternal grandparents in West Bloomfield.

During the murder trial, the jury listened to 911 calls made by Hoffman during the shooting. The prosecution argued Layne was not acting in self defense when she fatally shot Hoffman, while her defense argued Layne was scared and threatened when she shot the troubled teen.
