Macomb County commissioner admits he drank alcohol before crashing into police cruiser

Commissioner Don Brown apologizes for mistake

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Dashcam video captured footage of a longtime Macomb County commissioner rear-ending a parked police cruiser.

Commissioner Don Brown, 54, admits to having drunk alcohol the night he was arrested. Sterling Heights police had pulled over another driver when Brown hit their cruiser from behind.

Brown was remorseful during Monday's committee meeting, and he personally apologized to the officers involved. He said he also wants to apologize to his constituents.

"I'm embarrassed," Brown said. "This is out of character. It was below the legal limit. I was tired, but alcohol was a factor, and I have to admit that."

Dashcam video showed the collision, which sent a Sterling Heights police officer who was sitting inside the cruiser to the hospital with minor injuries. Brown struggled during a field sobriety test.

About two weeks ago, police were conducting a traffic stop on Mound Road near 18 1/2 Mile Road when Brown ran into the cruiser just after midnight.

The police report indicates Brown blew a 0.07, which is below the legal limit but within the threshold of impaired driving.

"I didn't realize how tired I was," Brown said. "I did have a few drinks, which was a mistake. I should've thought about that before I left."

The father of four was charged with operating while visibly impaired.

"Don't do what I've done," Brown said. "Lesson to everyone: If you're tired, stay put. Don't make the same mistake I have."

On the day of the accident, Brown was released after the effects of the alcohol had worn off and he had posted bond.
