Missing Detroit Marine 'Chef Doug': What we know

Man disappeared after night out with friends

U.S. Marine Douglas "Chef Doug" Calhoun has been missing since June 1, 2017 in Detroit.

DETROIT – U.S. Marine Douglas “Chef Doug” Calhoun went missing more than a month ago in Detroit.

UPDATE: Body found at vacant Detroit home identified as missing Marine 'Chef Doug'

As the search for Calhoun, 39, continues, here’s what we know:

Work no-show after a night out

Calhoun returned to his home 3500 block of West Outer Drive in Detroit about 3:30 a.m. June 1, 2017.

He had been out with friends that night and called to let his friends know he had made it home. No one heard from him again.

Eric Phillips, Calhoun’s brother-in-law, said if there was trouble, he would have been able to handle himself because he is 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs 230 pounds.

Calhoun is a personal chef and caterer. He didn’t show up to a job on June 2 and he missed a flight to a big event that weekend.

Police are calling the disappearance “suspicious.”

Vehicle found, credit cards used

Calhoun called his friends when he pulled in his driveway, but his car was later found near Evergreen Road and Fenkell Avenue on Detroit’s west side, about 6.5 miles from his home.

His family also said that his credit cards have been used since the early morning hours of June 1, but it wasn’t him who used them.

Unidentified body found

A tip led police to a vacant house on Detroit’s west side July 7.

The body of an unidentified man was found stuffed in a barrel at the house on Greydale Street and Outer Drive. The house is less than a mile from where Calhoun’s vehicle was found.

His family rushed to the scene with mixed emotions.

“We don’t want to see this for anybody’s family,” said Judy Benford, Calhoun’s aunt.

Police still haven’t identified the body, and said it will take some time to determine who the man is, if the crime happened at the house and how he died.

Reward offered, family pleads for answers

"As the days go by, it's just getting harder," his cousin Michelle Ingram said. "We have to stay strong, but we're going to find him. Somebody's got to give us some kind of answer."

Family and friends have searched the area where Calhoun’s car was found. They have passed out flyers and searched vacant lots for signs of their loved one.

"What I'm feeling, I can't describe it," Eric Phillips said.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $6,000 reward to anyone with information which helps locate Calhoun.

"Regardless of the money, if you know something somebody should say something and bring this man home to his family," Calhoun's sister, Dayna Phillips, said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or Detroit police at 313-596-1240 or 313-596-1616.
