Michigan DNR stocks Huron River, Spring Mill Pond, creates fishing opportunities

3,350 large adult trout stocked

Anglers have new fishing opportunities after the Michigan Department of Natural Resources stocked the Huron River and Spring Mill pond with 3,350 adult trout.

The Huron River at the Proud Lake Recreation Area in Oakland County was stocked with 900 brown trout and 1,650 rainbow trout between 15 and 21 inches. Spring Mill Pond at Island Lake Recreation Area in Livingston County was stocked with 200 brown trout and 600 rainbow trout.

The fish came from Michigan hatcheries. According to the DNR, every year the surplus of trout from fisheries is stocked in special regulation areas.

Until April 28, anglers are limited to flies-only, catch-and-release fishing at the Huron River. Children under 12 are allowed to keep one fish between 8 and 12 inches.

Until April 28, anglers are limited to artificial lures only, catch-and-release fishing at Spring Mill Pond.  Children under 12 are allowed to keep one fish between 8 and 12 inches.

Starting April 29, all baits will be allowed at both the Huron River and Spring Mill Pond, and up to five trout over 8 inches can be kept, while only three over 15 inches can be taken.
