Attorney General Bill Schuette and Licensing and Regulartory Affairs filed an administrative complaint alleging the following violations:

  • performing liposuction procedures in unsanitary conditions in an unfinished pole barn;
  • improperly disposing and storing medical waste;
  • improperly dispensing and recording the dispensing of controlled substance;
  • improperly mixing human and animal drugs; and
  • taking a controlled substance from the facility for personal use.

"Our investigation found that Dr. Bastow's conduct was negligent, incompetent and lacked good moral character," LARA Director Shelly Edgerton said. "Our top priority is the health and safety of Michiganders, and the dangerous and deplorable conditions of Dr. Bastow's facility warranted an immediate suspension of his medical license."

What happened

The complaint alleges a patient went to the pole barn facility for liposuction April 20. The procedure began at about 11 a.m. and lasted until about 9 p.m.

Bastow was allegedly assisted by an unlicensed health professional who helped administer shots of Demerol.

The complaint alleges that Bastow poured the fat removed from the patient down the sink, as opposed to properly disposing of the biological waste.

Family members of the patient were allowed to watch the procedure and became alarmed when the patient became drowsy and going in and out of consciousness. Emergency responders were called.

An ambulance took the patient to the hospital and an investigation began.

Bastow allegedly operated his practice inside the unfinished pole barn since 2015.
