Michigan Humane Society offers reward to find who set dog on fire

Terrier mix expected to survive

DETROIT – The Michigan Humane Society is offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for setting a terrier mix on fire.

The dog's owner reported the incident Tuesday on Detroit's east side, near E. Warren and Alter, the MHS said.

The owner told cruelty investigators that a neighbor had witnessed three young adults or teenagers setting a dog on fire and then fleeing the scene. The neighbor filled a container with water and used it to put out the fire. The dog is currently or being treated at a private veterinary clinic and is expected to survive.

“This crime is absolutely heartbreaking and senseless,” said Matthew Pepper, President and CEO of the Michigan Humane Society. “Incidents like this are unacceptable and we need to hold the individuals responsible for this horrific act accountable and bring them to justice.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the MHS Cruelty Investigation Department at 313-872-3401.
