Driver suffers severe injuries in crash

DETROIT – A Michigan State Police car chase ended in a crash Friday on the I-75 service drive at Livernois Avenue on Detroit's southwest side.

Officers saw a black Toyota Camry traveling at 81 mph on northbound I-75 near the construction zone by the Rouge River Bridge. They tried to stop the Camry at Schaefer Avenue, but the driver fled, athorities said.

Troopers chased the Camry north on I-75 and the driver exited at Livernois Avenue onto the service drive and ran into the back of a commercial box truck, police said.

The Camry caught fire, and the fire was extinguished by troopers at the scene. Officers said the driver had to be cut out of the car.

The driver suffered severe injuries, but they are not considered life-threatening, police said.

Police took the driver to a hospital for treatment, and he will be taken into custody pending charges.

Further investigation revealed that the car was stolen, police said.

The driver of the box truck was not injured.

It appears that a weapon might have been involved in the chase, but police are continuing to investigate.

The interior of the car was crushed and the windshield was smashed.

The license plate of the Camry shows that it is a rental car.
