Michigan State Police: Driver in crash on I-75 wasn't wearing seat belt

Victim identified as 24-year-old Lesean Khyrie Winfield Jr. of Detroit

DETROIT – **Update: Michigan State Police say they erroneously reported to the media that the victim in this crash had died. The victim is in critical condition. **

Michigan State Police said a 24-year-old man is in critical condition after a crash Wednesday morning on Interstate 75 in Detroit.

Police said the driver, Lesean Khyrie Winfield Jr., wasn't wearing his seat belt when he lost control of the Buick SUV he was driving in the northbound lanes near the Davison Freeway.

The SUV slammed into a median before flipping.

Police said Winfield was thrown from the SUV. He was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

The northbound lanes were shut down from 3:30 a.m. to just before 6 a.m. for cleanup of the crash.

Police said it doesn't appear that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
