2 Hamtramck students robbed at gun point

Superintendent sends letter to parents at Hamtramck High School warning of recent student crime

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. - In a letter sent home to parents on Dec 5th, officials at Hamtramck Public Schools say students were robbed at gun point in two separate incidents.

Superintendent of Schools Thomas Niczay wrote, "I want to inform you that unfortunately two Hamtramck High School students have become crime victims.  The first incident was on November 12, 2012 just outside the south entrance to the school. The second incident was on December 4, 2012 and was off school grounds as a student was walking alone to school."

The letter says in both instances a student holding a smart phone was approached by a man who robbed them at gun point.

The students were not harmed in either incident and it is believed the phones caught the attention of both robbers.

The man in each incident was described as black and approximately 5 foot 10 inches tall with a scruffy beard.

Hamtramck High School's student safety tips:

  • Never walk alone. 
  • Do not talk to strangers.
  • Be extra vigilant of strangers during the starting and dismissal times of schools.
  • Do not keep valuables (cell phones, electronic devices, etc…) out in the open while walking.
  • Be aware of the people around you. Report suspicious activities to the police.
  • Never keep valuables exposed in your car.  

The letter went on to say, "The Hamtramck Chief of Police Max Garbarino has informed me that the police have 'significant leads' which they are following up on."

On Nov. 26th a man grabbed a student by the back of the neck on the way at Hanley International Academy.

In this incident the man was described as white, with dirty blonde hair, gages in his ears and a small goatee.

The student was able to run away and was not harmed.
