3 men charged with murder of 71-year-old Ann Arbor man

David Maurer found dead in his apartment on Dec. 1; suspects are acquaintances, police say

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Three men have been charged with the murder of 71-year-old David Maurer of Ann Arbor.

Richard Ray Thompson, of Flat Rock, Mark Paling and Rikky Ranger, both of Melvindale, were arraigned in 14A District Court Monday on several charges including open murder, unarmed robbery and larceny.

They are being held in the Washtenaw County jail without bond.

At about 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1, Ann Arbor police were dispatched to the apartment of Maurer in the 600 block of West Huron. His badly decomposed body was found there. He had not been seen since late November.

According to Ann Arbor police, several items belonging to Maurer were missing including credit cards. Their investigation identified the three suspects as acquaintances of Maurer.

Thompson, 18, Paling, 19, and Ranger, 20, were arrested over the weekend.

Their preliminary exams are set for Dec. 26.
