9 rescued from stranded boat in Lake St. Clair

Boat was disabled, taking in water

HARRISON, Mich. - The Coast Guard rescued 9 people Saturday from a disabled boat that was taking in water on Lake St. Clair.

"A siren went off on the boat. We looked down. Mark was Driving. But we looked down and the check engine, you know, light came on," said Chris Brock, who was on the boat at the time.

The boat was stranded in the vicinity of the Middle Channel.

"I thought we were going under. I thought we were going under," said Mark Leach, who was driving the boat.

The boaters started to using plastic cups to get the water out of the boat.

Before the Coast Guard arrived on scene, TowBoat U.S. and a good Samaritan assisted the boaters. The Coast Guard boat-crew then transferred the 9 boaters onto a 33-foot SPC-LE rescue boat.

The Coast Guard transported the 9 boaters to Clinton River Boat Ramp in Harrison. TowBoat U.S. towed the disabled boat to the same ramp.

"The boat can be replaced. But life can't," said Brock.
