Bill would target cash-strapped school districts for closure

Lansing, Michigan – Financially troubled school districts could be dissolved under a new plan being debated by state lawmakers.

The bill would be a "last resort" for struggling districts and give the state schools superintendent and state Treasurer Andy Dillon the final say on a district's future. 

The proposal, currently on a fast track in the Michigan legislature, would require neighboring school districts to accept displaced students. During a hearing Tuesday, three school districts - Buena Vista, Pontiac, and Inkster - were mentioned by name as candidates for dissolution.
