Body of missing swimmer found in Walnut Lake

21-year-old man never comes up to surface after jumping from boat with friends early Friday morning

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – A 21-year-old man has drowned while swimming in Walnut Lake.

The body of Beverly Hills resident Lucas Zaima was found by divers just after noon Friday.

He had been missing in the water since about 1 a.m. -- when his friends reported that he never came back up to the surface after jumping off a boat.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said Zaima was with six other friends on a speedboat when he went into the water.

"They were swimming in the middle of the lake when they noticed that one person didn't come back up from under the water," said Sgt. Patrick Hatfield. "They started yelling for him. They did their search for him."

Hatfield said alcohol was involved and may have been a contributing factor in Zaima's drowning.

His body was found in 90 feet of water.

Linda Swanson has lived on the lake for more than two decades.

"I used to run the beach here for years and we've had quite a few incidents, unfortunately," she said. "There would be accidents and it took a long time to locate the bodies cause the lake is so deep."
