Detroit-area UPS driver sets safety record

Has gone 51 years without accident

LIVONIA, Mich. – A 73-year-old UPS driver in Livonia has set a company record.

Tom Camp has gone 51 years behind the wheel without an accident.

Camp, a Marine Corps veteran, began his career in 1962. He says his training and the use of caution is why he's been able to avoid accidents for so long.

"You need to assume other drivers are not as aware as you are," said Camp.  "I can't count how many times I've seen folks do crazy things behind the wheel - reading the paper or doing their make-up.  Cell phones are a part of it, too, but it's more than just that."

Camp has delivered more than 5 million UPS packages.

He said he has no plans to retire any time soon.
