Effort to save Macomb County's Selfridge Air Base continues

Obama administration has proposed 700 job cuts at the base

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. - Local leaders will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday morning to show support for the now embattled men and women in the Air National Guard who serve at the Selfridge Air National Guard base.

What is at stake?

The Obama administration is reducing the size of the military and has targeted Selfridge for more than 700 job cuts.

Macomb County executive Mark Hacek along with Macomb County board of commissioners chair Kathy Vosberg and president of the Selfridge base community council, Joe Hallman will meet at Zucarro's Banquet Center on Gratiot Avenue in Chesterfield Township to show support for the men and women at the base.

What would the cuts mean?

Local congressional leaders are questioning the cuts.

Hackel says the cuts will hurt the families who lose their positions as well as the local community where those send their kids to school, pay taxes, own homes and spend money.

Pentagon officials believe the cuts will help the military become more lean and ready for duty.
