Funeral held for slain West Bloomfield officer Pat O'Rourke

West Bloomfield police officer killed in shooting at home on Forest Edge Lane; gunman later killed himself

FENTON, Mich. – Through tears and tributes on Friday, family, friends and fellow police officers laid West Bloomfield police Officer Patrick O'Rourke to rest at his funeral.

O'Rourke was shot and killed Sunday night by a gunman, Ricky Coley, who later took his own life after a day-long standoff at the house on Forest Edge Lane in West Bloomfield.

O'Rourke's wife, Amy, hugged a teddy bear as she walked with her young children into St. John's Catholic Church in Fenton.

She spoke briefly about her husband's strong faith and compassion for people. She talked about the struggle it was to balance working opposite shifts with husband and finding time for family. But, she said, they always found a way to do it.

"We often turned down, 'Hey come out for this' or 'Come out for that' because we just wanted to sit on the couch to be together," Amy O'Rourke said, holding her baby son.

"I don't know how I'm ever going to express my gratitude. I'm a 'Thank you' card writer, I love to do that. But it's going to take me a long time. So, wait for it, it'll come. I love you guys so much," she said. "God bless you all. Paddy's here with us, he is loving it. He wouldn't have asked for any of this."
