Madison Heights jewelry heist suspects crash after fleeing; 1 arrested, 1 still at large

Madison Heights jewelry store robbery suspects crash van while fleeing; schools temporarily locked down during foot chase

The robbery happened about 1 p.m. Monday afternoon and the crash happened about 5 minutes later.

Madison Heights police were searching for two men suspected of robbing the Jared Jewelry store at 14 Mile and John R. roads. Police caught up to the suspects after their van reached the intersection of 13 Mile and John R. roads and struck a red car. The suspects then fled on foot and officers followed.

The injuries and identities of the people in the red car are not yet known. Witnesses say two men took off running from the suspects' van when it skidded to a stop.

"There was police right behind the van, chasing him, but then (police) stopped for the innocent bystander that got hit in the red car," said witness Ryan Syts, who works nearby. "I looked out and there was a van sliding down the road and then two guys jumped out, darted away and ran behind the buildings and police started chasing them."

Madison Heights police responded in force.

"Fifteen to 20 police officers combing the area, a lot of plain-clothes guys that you wouldn't know are police," said witness Bob Parkland.

Officers caught and arrested one of the suspects. However, the other got away, forcing a brief lockdown at two nearby schools.

That suspect still is on the run.
