Michigan National Guard member caught attempting break-in at Springfield Township home

Oakland County Sheriff's deputy finds man attempting to break into home in 800 block of Cedar

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Police in Springfield Township say a member of the Michigan National Guard was caught trying to break into a home Thursday night in the 800 block of Cedar.

Christopher Murphy, 32, of Holly Township, is charged with attempted home invasion after an Oakland County Sheriff's deputy found him trying to enter the home through a rear sliding door.

Police say the homeowner, who was home at the time with his young daughter, called to say a man was trying trying to break into his home through the front door. When the deputy arrived he found Murphy at the back door. Police say Murphy was wearing a camouflage uniform with his name and unit patches.

After arresting him, police say they found breaking and entering tools, a mask, gloves, a k-bar and two air-soft pistols in his vehicle.

Murphy is being held at the Oakland County Jail. His bond was set at $25,000.

He is scheduled to appear in court on April 12.

Police say Murphy's National guard unit commander is moving to terminate him.
