SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Southfield City council has voted against re-zoning a piece of property at 12-mile and Southfield for a new Walmart store.
The property, once the home of St. Bede Church and School, has been vacant for five years and is owned by the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Walmart requested a commercial zoning to allow the construction of the store on the site.
A total of 72 people signed up to speak at the public hearing Monday night, and discussion stretched past midnight.
Much of the concern centered on traffic at the intersection that is one of the most congested in the city. Walmart countered that it had for new signals and other traffic measures.
The council vote was 5-1.
