1 person killed, another in critical condition after rollover crash on Weber Road in Holly Township

Michigan State Police say beer was found in car

HOLLY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 19-year-old Holly man was killed early Tuesday morning in a single vehicle accident that critically injured his 41-year-old passenger.

Michigan State Police tell Local 4 that neighbors heard a noise loud enough to wake them at 1 a.m., however the accident itself wasn't discovered until 5:45 a.m.

It happened on East Holly Road, right after Weber Road.

"The passenger was trapped for hours with the victim strapped in his seatbelt directly over him," said MSP Trooper Nate Ellis.

"It's so sad," said Neighbor Cary Smith.

Her husband got out of bed and looked up and down the road just after 1 a.m., but didn't see anything. Another concerned neighbor drove up and down the road looking for the accident, but didn't see anything.

When the sun came up, that's when people driving by saw a car smashed and on it's top about 35 yards off the road and in some tall grass.

The 41-year-old passenger was critically injured and had to be cut out of the car.

Troopers do not think if the accident had been discovered when it happened that the driver would have survived.

Investigators believe the driver was speeding when he lost control, hit a ditch then a mailbox and then rolled several times into the tall grass area off of the road.

The car is registered to a man in South Carolina. He tells MSP that he lent his car to his grandson who drove to Holly. That grandson was not in the car when the accident happened.  Police are working to identify the driver, the passenger and find out why they were driving the man's car.

Beer was found in the car and toxicology tests on the driver will now be done by the Oakland County Medical Examiner's office.

Local 4's Shawn Ley is in Holly speaking to witnesses and will have more on Local 4 News.
