Madison Heights stops illegal trash dumping

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. – Police and city code enforcement officials have stopped the illegal dumping of garbage in Madison Heights that began on Aug. 15, but not before 2,000 to 3,000 tons of garbage had already been left.

Several garbage haulers that work with the South Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority left the trash in open, outdoor piles outside the SOCRRA facility on John R. Road.

The facility is not a licensed landfill.

The way the garbage has been dumped creates a threat to public safety, health, and welfare. There is a high likelihood for contamination as well as odors, rodents, and birds.

The city plans to continue legal action under the City Code to solve the problem and ensure that no more illegal dumping occurs.

Madison Heights has extended hours and crews of waste haulers to deal with the increase of trash following the flood on Aug. 11.
