Marine Patrols to return to Sylvan and Otter Lakes in Oakland County

Neighboring communities asked to contribute to the cost

SYLVAN LAKE, Mich. – Marine patrols are being reintroduced on Sylvan and Otter lakes.

The move comes after two children died, and one was critically hurt, in a tragic accident Sunday on Sylvan Lake.

"When you think as a parent, losing one child is horrific but I can't imagine having three in that situation, I can't even wrap my mind around it," said Oakland County Sheriff, Michael Bouchard.

Alexander Monsour, 11, died Sunday. His sister, 6-year-old Gabrielle, died Monday.

Their 10-year-old sister, Adriana, remains hospitalized.

The West Bloomfield Township siblings were being pulled by their father who was operating a jet ski when the boat crossed their

The funeral for Alexander and Gabrielle is scheduled for Friday.

In 2010, budget cuts forced The Oakland County Sheriff's department to pull patrols off the water -- which would force the lakefront communities to pay for those marine division patrols. But the tubing and jet ski accident that tore apart a family and rocked community, reaffirmed the need for experienced eyes and ears on the water.

Sylvan Lake officials said the city is finalizing the deal with the Sheriff's Department, but expect to see marine patrols on this water this weekend.

The patrols will cost the city about $400 to $500 a week and that money will come out of the Sylvan Lakes general fund. The Oakland County Boat Club may also help raise money to help cover the cost.

The patrols will begin this weekend and continue on weekends through the summer. Exact times and details are still being worked out with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department Marine Division.
